This was a real challenge because my memory is not great at the best of times. So I learned to everything down, for my own future use and reference. I basically developed onboarding materials for myself: checklists, templates, web copy, and excruciatingly detailed directions for navigating through business-critical systems.
In many cases, this was among the first procedural documents the organization had. In every case, the team adoped my documentation of their procedures, and saved themselves a lot of time and headaches.
