Five Fundraising Essentials for Your Nonprofit

Fundraising is everyone’s job – don’t leave it all up to a committee!

Too often, nonprofits treat fundraising as an independent task, assigned to a person or a committee to handle while everyone else takes care of the main business.

This approach is doomed to failure, because fundraising requires efforts and knowledge from across the organization – leadership, communications, programming, administration, and membership all need to be involved in a successful fundraising campaign from the earliest stages.

How do you get there from here? Here are five important places to start:

  1. Establish a single list for all of your contacts, including their correspondence preferences
  2. Engage with your community so they see the value of donations
  3. Periodically (but regularly) ask your supporters for donations
  4. Provide opportunities for community to engage with you outside of being asked for money (eg programming functions, volunteer appreciation events).
  5. Your board members need to be lead fundraisers. They should donate, ask their networks to donate, and actively seek out potential new supporters.
